  三、阅读理解(共15题;每小题2分,满分30分)
  A
I found out one time that doing a favor for someone could get you into a lot of trouble. I was in the eighth grade at the time, and we were having a final test. During the test, the girl sitting next to me whispered something, but I didn’t understand. So I leaned over her way and found out that she was trying to ask me if I had an extra pen. She showed me that hers was out of ink and would not write. I happened to have an extra one, so I took it out of my pocket and put it on her desk.
Later, after the test papers had been turned in, the teacher asked me to stay in the room when all the other students were dismissed. As soon as we were alone, she began to talk to me about what it meant to grow up; she talked about how important it was to stand on your own two feet and be responsible for your own acts. For a long time, she talked about honesty and emphasized the fact that when people do something dishonest, they are really cheating themselves. She made me promise that I would think seriously about all the things she had said, and then she told me I could leave. I walked out of the room wondering why she had chosen to talk to me about all those things.
Later on, I found out that she thought I had cheated on the test. When she saw me lean over to talk to the girl next to me, it looked as if I was copying answers from the girl’s test paper. I tried to explain about the pen, but all she could say was it seemed very strange to her that I hadn’t talked of anything about the pen the day she talked to me right after the test. Even if I tried to explain that I was just doing the girl a favor by letting her use my pen, I was sure she continued to believe that I had cheated on the test.

  A. in the teacher’s office B. in an exam room
  C. in the school D. in the language lab
  37. The girl wanted to borrow a pen, because_______ .
  A. she had not brought a pen with her

  A. to go on writing his paper
  B. to stop whispering
  C. to leave the room immediately
  D. to stay behind after the exam
  39. The thing(s) emphasized in her talk was(were)_______ .
  A. honesty B. sense of duty
  C. seriousness D. all of the above
  40. The boy knew everything_______ .
  A. the moment he was asked to stay behind
  B. when the teacher started talking about honesty
  C. only some time later
  D. when he was walking out of the room

Some kids start to drink alcohol at a young age. They think it is part of becoming an adult. They also think drinking is not that bad because so many people do it. They feel it is not as bad as taking drugs. It is easy for kids to get liquor by using fake identification.
Parents may start to notice a change in their child’s behavior if the child starts drinking. Kids who drink sometimes stop doing things they normally liked to do. They may keep telephone calls and meetings a secret and not want anybody to touch their things. They act moodily and do not have the same eating and sleeping habits.
Parents need to stay involved in their kids’ lives. They should talk to their children about their problems to be aware of any changes.
Parents can be the best protection. Children who get a lot of love can feel good about themselves. It helps them resist doing bad things even when other kids are doing them. Parents can also help set a good example by not drinking and driving. They can have firm rules in the home that everyone follows.
Give the children good ideas on how to say “no” to drinking, even when they are at a party. Try not to overreact or panic if the child tries alcohol. How you handle it can affect their attitude. It may be helpful to talk to other parents about setting up curfews and rules about parties or other events.
  41. Which of the following is NOT the reason why some kids have an early start of drinking?
  A. They want to show their maturity by drinking alcohol.
  B. Drinking alcohol is much cooler than taking drugs.
  C. They are affected by many other people around them.
  D. They can get liquor easily.
  42. According to the passage, what changes may happen to the kids who start drinking?
  A. Nothing serious will happen to them.
  B. They keep the same eating and sleeping habits. C. They can control their moods quite well.
  D. Sometimes they act secretly.
  43. Which is the main subject discussed in the passage?
  A. Teen health. B. Teen education.
  C. Teen drinking. D. Parents’ worries.

In 1939 two brothers, Mac and Dick McDonald, started a drive-in restaurant in San Bernadino, California. They carefully chose a busy corner for their location. They had run their own businesses for years, first a theater, then a barbecue restaurant, then another drive-in. But in their new operation, they offered a new, shortened menu: French fries, hamburgers, and sodas. To this small selection they added one new idea: quick service, no waiters or waitresses, and no tips.
Their hamburgers sold for fifteen cents. Cheese was another four cents. Their French fries and hamburgers had a remarkable uniformity, for the brothers had developed a strict routine for the preparation of their food, and they insisted on their cooks’ sticking to their routine. Their new drive-in became surprisingly popular, particularly for lunch. People drove up by the hundreds during the busy noontime. The self-service restaurant was so popular that the brothers had allowed ten copies of their restaurants to be opened. They were content with this modest success until they met Ray Kroc.
Kroc was a salesman who met the McDonald brothers in 1954, when he was selling milkshake-mixing machines. He quickly saw the special attraction of the brothers’ fast-food restaurants and bought the right to franchise (特许经营) other copies of their restaurants. The agreement included the right to duplicate (复制) the menu, the equipment, even their red and white buildings with the golden arches.
Today McDonald’s is really a household name. In 1976, McDonald’s had over $1 billion in total sales. Its first twenty-two years is one of the most surprising success stories in modern American business history.
  44. This passage mainly talks about_______ .
  A. the development of fast food services
  B. how McDonald’s became a billion-dollar business
  C. the business careers of Mac and Dick McDonald
  D. Ray Kroc’s business talent
  45. Mac and Dick managed all of the following businesses except_______ .
  A. a drive-in B. a theater
  C. a cinema D. a barbecue restaurant
  46. The passage suggests that_______ .
  A. creativity is an important element of business success
  B. Ray Kroc was the close partner of the McDonald brothers C. Mac and Dick McDonald became broken after they sold their ideas to Ray Kroc
  D. California is the best place to go into business
  D
Thanks to science, industry and moral philosophy, mankind’s steps were at last guided up the right path in the past century. The 19th century of steam was about to give way to the 20th century of oil and electricity. Charles Darwin’s theory of evolution, only 41 years old in 1900, provided a scientific basis for the idea that progress was not to be stopped, determined by natural law. And almost everybody thought that the development would continue to be as slow as that in the 19th century.
Inventions like the railroad or the telegraph or the typewriter enabled people to live their everyday lives a little more conveniently. No one could have guessed that new ideas would storm the world with a force and frequency at an amazing pace. This high-speed attack of new ideas and technologies seemed to make people believe in the old dreams of a perfect life on earth, of a safe world in which natural disasters would be controlled. But the fast progress was accompanied by something against mankind’s will.
Murders in Sarajevo in 1914 led to the Great War, which did more than destroy a generation of Europeans. The Great War was most commonly called so until the beginning of World War II when it was renamed World War I. Hitler rose to power in the 1930’s. It was this very man who ordered the attack of Poland, only to meet with his failure when Great Britain and France made war on Germany. On December 7, 1941, the Japanese bombed the American naval base at Pearl harbor. Americans decided to enter the war, and World War II was now truly a world war.
But civilization was not crushed by the two great wars, and from the ruins people built a way of life again. The citizens of the 20th century felt free to reinvent themselves. In that task they were aided by two far-reaching developments—Psychoanalysis and the Bomb.
  47. It can be inferred from the passage that at the beginning of the 20th century_______ .
  A. great changes occurred between the 19th century and the 20th century
  B. the world knew nothing about science, industry and moral philosophy
  C. mankind came to realize there was not a change in the 19th century
  D. Darwin, the builder of the theory of evolution, was in his forties
  48. Because of the inventions like the railroad, telegraph and typewriter, people could_______ . A. know that the progress was made only by scientists
  B. enjoy their life more comfortably and conveniently
  C. tell that a mankind killing was about to take place
  D. make their dreams of a better life and a better world come true
  49. Why was the Great War renamed as World War I?
  A. Because it destroyed a generation of Europeans.
  B. Because it was not only a war but a human disaster.
  C. Because it was followed by the other world war.
  D. Because it was influenced by new ideas.
  50. Which happening is NOT mentioned in this passage before World War II?
  A. Hitler came into power.
  B. Japan attached Pearl Harbor.
  C. Poland was attacked by Germany.
  D. USA had not planned to go into the war.
  四、任务型阅读(共10题;每小题1分,满分10分)
Quality after-school programs are designed to improve academic performance, decrease youth crimes and other high-risk behaviors, and help young people grow into healthy, successful adults.
The effect of quality after-school programs on academic performance is clear. Studies show that students who take part in such programs show better work habits, higher rates of homework completion, improved grades, and higher scores on achievement tests. They also have fewer absences and are less likely to blame. After-school programs also influence high-risk teen behavior. Various studies show decreased rates of crime, drug use, and teen sex among youth who join in well-run after-school programs when compared to similar youth who do not. Finally, after-school programs play an important role in supporting the following fields of development: physical development, mental development and social development. Thus, one can safely say that after-school programming is an effective method to help young people become contributing members of society.
Although there is enough proof from both small and large assessments that after-school programs can make a positive difference, it is important to note that not all programs are equal. First, dosage matters—young people who attend the most hours over the most years benefit more than members who attend less often or over a shorter period of time. Next, after-school programs make bigger difference for those students who need help most and have the fewest choices. Finally, program qualities matter. After-school programs work best when they create unique opportunities for youth. They should provide opportunities for positive relationships, skill building, meaningful involvement, expression, suggestion, service, and work. Staff characteristics make an important difference in the quality of a program. The adults should treat youth as partners, create safe and fair environments, encourage personalized involvement, and actively create learning opportunities. In short, although after-school programs have a promising future, how they are designed and run matters. 五、书面表达(25分)

Today I listened to a report with my classmates made by Wan Hai, a school leaver of our school, who is now studying in Beijing University. After the report, I learn that the differences between high school life and college life are great, though students both in high schools and colleges work hard to get good grades.
Firstly, we always depend on our parents and teachers to solve difficult problems in high school, while at college we have to rely on ourselves. Secondly, in high school our teachers show us how to solve every problem by detailed explanations, but at college we are expected to solve problems by ourselves. Finally, in high school we spend most of our time studying, having little time relaxing ourselves. However, at college we have more free time to take part in all kinds of activities.
So in order to adapt to college life quickly, I think we high school students should learn to be independent and try to form good study habits from now on. Only in this way can we lead a meaningful college life in future.
