Two existing estimation methods were selected for evaluation: one is the Bowers’ influence function and the other is the hyperbolic profile function. Both of these projections have been applied to some of the measured subsidence profiles in U.S. coal mines. Discusses the effect of homogeneous or heterogeneous upper strata on surface subsidence and discusses the application of the Balles theory as a predictive method for both types of strata. The main factor that affects the characteristics of the subsidence profile is the inflection point moving to the center line of the longwall mining panel. A computer program was prepared for analysis.
