马士作为研究中国问题的历史学家和长期在中国海关任职的税务司,其学术生涯和职业生涯在学术界已有一定的研究,本文尝试揭示马士在华期间作为通商口岸外国人领袖的社会生涯。1907年,马士在上海担任海关总税务司署造册处税务司期间,广泛参与亚洲文会北中国支会、中国基督教青年会和美商中华协会的各项活动,并在这些团体中担任重要职务,同时,马士还主持迎接了访问上海的美国陆军部长塔夫脱。本文试图说明,海关官员的身份有助于马士成为通商口岸外人群体的领袖,他身为清政府官员,也同时服务于外人在华的外交、司法、学术、宗教和商业事务,这些经历为马士成为中国问题专家奠定了基础。
As an historian working on China issues and a taxation secretary who has long held a position in China Customs, his academic career and career have been studied in academia. This paper attempts to reveal the role of Maastricht as the foreigner leader in the treaty ports during his stay in China Social career. During 1907 Maas served extensively in various activities of the Asian Civilization North China Branch, China Young Men’s Christian Association and American American Chinese Association during his duties as Tax Affairs Division of the Customs General Taxation Department in Shanghai. This article attempts to show that the identity of the customs officer helps Maersk to become the leader of the aliens outside the treaty ports. As an official of the Qing government, he also serves diplomatic, judicial, academic, religious and commercial affairs of outsiders in China as Maersk laid the foundation for an expert on China.
