国家档案馆的独立为扩大其影响提供了前所未有的机会。在这一时刻担任国家档案馆馆长是对我个人、也是对我业务的挑战。我将满怀信心地迎接这一挑战。第一点,也是我所说的最重要的一点就是,我们一定都知道,国家档案馆并不仅仅是指位于国会大厦和白宫之间的、为宾夕法尼亚大街增辉的这座美丽的大楼,相反它是—个在全国14个州30多个地方拥有3000名忠实的工作人员的真正全国性的机构。它保管着联邦政府的珍贵文件,拥有大批技术熟练的专业人员,从事一种内容广泛的工作,也还有自己的出版物,所有这些,都形成了国家档案馆的巨大潜力,足以影响美国以及世界各国档案和手稿界的每一领域。我相信,国家档案馆更大规模地为公众提供服务,并完成其更重要的使命的时代已经到来了。国家档案馆传统工作的重心是服务于历史研究人员,这应该是,而且也必然继续是它最基本的任务,
The independence of the national archives offers an unprecedented opportunity to expand its influence. Being a curator of the National Archives at this moment is a challenge to me personally and to my business. I will confidently meet this challenge with confidence. First, and most importantly, what I have said is that we all know that the National Archives does more than just refer to this beautiful building that captures the streets of Pennsylvania, between the Houses of Parliament and the White House; on the contrary, Is a truly national institution with 3,000 loyal staff members in more than 30 locations in 14 states across the country. It holds tremendous federal government documents, a large pool of skilled professionals, a wide range of work, and its own publications, all of which form a huge potential for the National Archives, enough to affect the United States and Every area of the world archives and manuscripts. I believe the time has come for the National Archives to serve the public on a larger scale and fulfill its more important mission. The focus of the traditional work of the National Archives is to serve the historical researchers, which should and must continue to be its most basic task,
