According to a recent research paper entitled “CATV Communications in Western Europe, 1985,” published by the French International Television Commission (CIT), the claim that CATV in Europe is not the kind of scourge that has often been described. The paper disclosed that at present, 8.5% of residential dwellings in Western Europe have been put on CATV, which may double in the next 10 years. CATV communications are still highly concentrated in Belgium, the Netherlands and Switzerland, which, although they account for only 8% of households in Western Europe, have over two-thirds of CATV users in Western Europe. The vast majority of existing CATV systems are very small, with perhaps 85% of the systems connected to less than 100 households. In fact, there are more than 10,000 users in about 200 CATV networks throughout Western Europe. Belgium and the Netherlands are not only the most concentrated areas for CATV subscribers (83 and 60% respectively of the total population), they also have most of the largest networks. In the UK, CATV subscribers will continue to decline as obsolete relay networks are phased out and there is no alternative to multi-channel systems so far. In France, despite the government’s plan to implement the national network, progress has been slow, with few users of the network increasing since 1984. In West Germany, CATV is heavily used in the Bundepost, so more than 1 million households now have access to the CATV network.
