广州铁路局管内的京广线郴州—韶关间、湘桂线衡阳—冷水滩间,是弯道多、曲线半径小的关键区段。在这两区段运用的广州机务段的东风4型内燃机车与衡阳机务段的FD型蒸汽机车轮缘磨耗非常严重,架修间因轮缘磨耗到限落轮次数很多。为了减少轮缘磨耗,广州机务段自1976年开始进行了磨耗型轮对装车运用试验,使轮轨接触部分曲线符合磨耗后的外形,以减少轮缘的磨耗。并于1979年选择效果较好的G_3型作扩大装车运用试验(详见《内燃机车》杂志
