Everything starts with the question: Marco Polo traveled to China? Frances Wood, director of the Chinese department of the British Museum, in her eponymous book, published in 1996, claimed that Marco Polo had not been to China. She doubted the reliability of Marco Polo, whose arguments, to a large extent, were not based on what Marco Polo had written in a travelogue written in the 13th century, but based on what he did not mention. Wood questioned why Marco Polo did not mention China’s world-renowned achievements and customs such as printing, wrapping feet, calligraphy, fishing with cormorants, drinking tea, chopsticks and the Great Wall.
