白扁豆的祖籍在印度尼西亚的爪哇岛等地,据说在汉晋时代引入华夏。崇明岛栽培白扁豆的历史已有近百年。最早于崇明马桥大公所(即天主教堂),由西洋传教士带入,故又有“洋扁豆”之别称。它是一年生蔓性草本,喜温、怕冷。由于其豆荚宽大扁薄,茎蔓缠绕攀生,别号“沿篱豆”;又因其豆脊有白纹路,故又有“蛾眉豆”的雅名。该豆蔓长200～250cm,有光滑无茸毛的二个小叶组成一张复叶,
