连接英法两国的海底隧道约长39公里，列车通过隧道需要20多分钟。在隧道内对旅客来说主要危险是火灾。列车的设计要尽量减少发生火灾的可能性，避免使用产生烟及毒气的物质。因此采用了地铁的防火规范。
