The cooling tower is a structure (or equipment) designed to evaporate cooling water. When the water circulates through the tower and the hot surface, it gets enough energy to partially evaporate. The fan draws air through the cooling tower (mechanical ventilation) to promote evaporation. Approximately 1000 Btu of heat can be removed from the cooling tower system for every 1 pound of water evaporated. Remove 15,000 Btu per hour as a cooling tower “ton,” which equates to evaporation of 15 pounds or 1.8 gallons of water per hour. One of the consequences of biological processes and the control of mechanical ventilation is that air is washed, and organic matter and biological debris in the air are thrown into cooling water.
