中国古代的礼仪禁忌意味着对那些神圣的、不吉利的或不洁的事物,一般人不能触摸或接近。其性质即为对神圣事物的尊重、对不吉利事物和不洁事物的回避。其功能包括正言行、严尊卑、明人伦、防淫乱、避祸害五个方面。有必要重新认识儒家礼仪,发掘其与现代社会发展相融,能促进当代中国社会公德建设的内容与规范,使之成为国民日常生活应当遵守的礼仪,从而有利于我国精神文明的发展,减少物质文明飞速发展带来的种种副作用和弊病。
