美国作家德莱塞由于在《嘉莉妹妹》中描述了一位处处反叛男权主义且最终获得成功的新女性,为当时社会舆论所大不容,因而在文学创作上初试牛刀便遭遇重创。重整旗鼓后他带着《珍妮姑娘》卷土重来,与嘉莉妹妹的命运恰巧相反,珍妮姑娘在男权主义面前处处牺牲仍落得凄凉惨败,德莱塞却因此在文学界实现逆袭、转败为胜。从嘉莉到珍妮的转变,德莱塞并未向男权主义妥协,而是在使用比先前更为老练圆润的笔锋,继续向男权主义发出更加辛辣的讽刺与激烈的控诉。
