Recent studies have shown that the response of normal coronary arteries to physical or mental stress is progressive vasodilation and increased blood flow. The atherosclerotic vessels lose their ability to dilate and exhibit anomalous contractility, parallel to the response to acetylcholine; indicating loss of ability of the coronary endothelium to regulate vasodilation. Restoring the normal endothelial function of coronary arteries is likely to be an important therapeutic target for controlling myocardial ischemia and atherosclerosis.
