黄人《中国文学史》与《京师大学堂章程》、《高等学堂章程》具有相通的重视德育以开民智之精神内涵与教育“致用”之目的。黄人据《高等学堂章程》“中国文学门”的课程设置与“文学要义”之精神及相关规定来编撰文学史。黄著不仅紧贴西学思潮,而且紧贴当时的教育变革。这种情形表明各《章程》不仅成为当时大学堂课程设置的指导原则,也在某种程度上影响教会学校的教育,这是教育“致用”之思想的典型。
