This paper summarizes the basic principles and characteristics of ferrography, and especially evaluates its development in machine condition monitoring. A brief introduction to the iron spectrometer principle, structure and wear particle identification and other aspects of knowledge. According to the relevant data at home and abroad and the author’s practice in recent years, combined with the typical example analysis, the application of ferrography in the fundamental research of Tribology and the state monitoring of Tribology system are respectively expounded.
