Xili Na Sauter: women without men Period: October 25, 2008 - January 18, 2009 Venue: Canopy Gallery Beijing, Beijing, USA Chinese artist Xili Na Sauter’s first Chinese show - a magical reality image The collection “Women Without Men” will be officially opened on October 25 at Canopy Gallery. Xili Na Sauter is famous for its conceptual photography and video portraying its hometown Islamic culture. It is gorgeous, graceful and poetic. As a Iranian who has been living in the United States year-round, she uses visual methods to examine complex relationships such as religion and secularism, women and men, tradition and modernity, East and West in today’s Islamic society. We see, through her lens, a different kind of Islam - a common human problem that occurs in Islamic context - which is different from the well-known single, negative Islamic impression made known to the media after 9/11.
