荀子的“性恶论”是以特定的人性的内容为基础的。事实上他并不关心“性”是否让人成为了人,而只注重这“性”让人产生了怎样的行为。在荀子看来,属于性的东西有两种:人本身具有的基本能力(如目辨白黑的能力)和欲望。而荀子所谓的那种人本身具有的基本能力是无法推动人产生行为的,因而行为产生的原动力就落在人的欲望上,而“恶”也最终落脚在欲望上。因此,人的弃恶从善也最终转化为如何对待欲望。
Xunzi’s Theory of Sex and Evil is based on the specific human nature. In fact, he does not care about whether “sex” makes people become human beings, and only focuses on what kind of behavior this “sex” produces. In Xunzi’s view, there are two kinds of things that belong to the nature: the basic ability of the person itself (such as the ability to distinguish between white and black) and the desire. However, the basic ability of Xunzi’s so-called people can not impel people to produce behaviors. Therefore, the motive force of behavior falls on the desire of human beings, and “evil” finally settles on the desire. Therefore, people’s abstinence from good also eventually transformed into how to deal with the desire.
