汤显祖《批评花间集》四卷,一直被认为是汤学研究、词学研究的重要文献之一。但其中的署名汤显祖序,有摘编前人词论文字的嫌疑;正文中的汤显祖评语,涉及名物、词源、本事、典故等部分,亦多袭自杨慎《词品》、王世贞《艺苑卮言》。结合学界对杨慎评点《草堂诗馀》、汤显祖评点《艳异编》的辨伪情况,可知明万历闵映璧套印本中的评点造假颇为普遍,其作者应为闵映璧或其友人。
