作者依据1995年9月末的日本铁路统计资料，在做了部分必要的修改之后，对日本各铁路公司内燃机车的保有量及配属情况作了综合报道，并对日本内燃机车今后的发展趋势做了展望。据作者统计，由于受铁路内燃动车化及电力化的影响，日本各铁路公司当前的内燃机车总保有量为650余台，仅相当于内燃化全盛时期的四分之一。作者认为，今后日本各铁路公司的内燃机车保有量还将有较大幅度的减少。
Based on the statistics of Japanese railways at the end of September 1995, the author made a comprehensive report on the holdings of locomotives and their affiliations of Japanese railway companies after making the necessary changes. In the meantime, he also made some suggestions on the future development of Japanese diesel locomotives Outlook. According to the author’s statistics, the total number of diesel locomotives currently owned by Japanese railway companies is more than 650, which is only equivalent to one quarter of the heyday of internal combustion due to the impact of the incineration and electrification of the railway. The author believes that in the future Japan’s railway companies maintain the number of diesel vehicles will also have a more substantial reduction.
