清朝康熙年间文华殿大学士兼礼部尚书张英,老家在安徽桐城县。有一年,他的家人因修筑围墙之事而与邻居互相争夺地界,矛盾十分激烈,闹得不可开交。当地官员感到很棘手,觉得很难调停处理。其家人便从桐城写信寄到北京,请求张英出面处理,希望凭借他的高官地位和权势把邻居压下去。张英接信以后,非但不采纳家人的意见,反而主张退让,宁肯自家吃些亏,也要和邻居搞好关系。他提笔赋诗,以诗代信,劝导家人。他在诗中写道:“千里修书只为墙,让他三尺又何妨?长城万里今犹在,不见当年秦始皇。”诗的意思是说:家人从千里之外的安徽桐城寄来书信,不过是为了修围
