Evaporation method of metal mirror plating is the early commercial large-area vacuum coating technology. For these early applications, there was no special control over film thickness and uniformity as long as the optical density of the film and the adhesion of the film to the substrate satisfied the basic requirements. To date, large area vacuum coatings have evolved from simple mirror making and the coating of rigid individual articles within a “bell jar” to the continuous preparation of films on paper and plastic substrates using a winding coater. These large area coating technologies are widely used, including metallized polymer films for capacitors, decorative films for packaging materials, architectural glass coatings, decorative craft coatings, mirror and lens coatings, and anti-dazzle CRT screens.
