A thousand (caustic soda) tankers in a large chemical production plant involved serious repair problems in six of the ten carbon and cast iron valves. A computerized fleet maintenance record and revealing field operations showed that the valve had an average life of only one year and the company spent more than $ 250,000 a year replacing the valve. In addition, some adverse effects have led to problems with vehicle sampling, iron contamination, leakage and temporary unloading. The turning point was the decision to renovate existing steel and cast iron valves and apply a 3 mil thick, low-phosphorus, electroless nickel coating (LPEN).
