Wells’s “Time Machine” is a mirror of the Victorian Empire. Wells’s use of post-colonialist and orientalist imperialist narratives in his novels embodies the romance of the bourgeoisie triggered by the imperial prosperity. At the same time, however, he also used modernist narratives to express his concern about the sustainability of the empire and questioned the rationality of the colonial rule of the empire. The dual narrative of imperialism and modernism gives an intriguing meaning to the “time machine” and expresses some extreme state of struggling inner-knowledge elites in the mid-to-late Victorian society.
