2001年元旦,广州日报没有再重复去年同期出200版的大手笔,它的头版一改“要闻式”编排的惯例,以近1/3的篇幅,在正中间位置刊出了自己的形象广告:以鲜红底色作衬,首先映入人们眼帘的是反白的《广州日报》报头,下接黑体大字“中国第一个社会主义报业集团,21世纪献给读者的第一份报纸”;另有一段新诗体广告正文,周围则饰以浓缩百年中国史的黑白图片。相信许多读者会对这段广告正文中的话语产生共鸣:
