Critics rarely pay close attention to Carl Thornberry, the great 20th-century poet in the United States. His work “Chicago” is even more blamed for its crude, bold and realistic language style. From the perspective of ecocriticism, we find that the “rough” of Sanmbourg precisely condemns the brutal and cruel, its “vulgar” or even “barbaric” language full of tender tender humanistic concern. On the one hand, the poem inherited Whitman’s bold and heroic momentum; on the other hand, she also got rid of the idyllic romance singing and melted the reality and art into one and ruthlessly exposed and criticized the evil brought by the industrial development to the city At the same time, they greatly praised the vitality and vigor brought by urban development and demonstrated the poet’s attention to the ecological wisdom of the long-term development of mankind.
