The general narration of world history after 1500 is divided into two successive stages:the early modem and modem periods.Demarcated roughly by 1800,they are usually portrayed in subtly different ways and with different emphases.Most studies on the early modem era tend to highlight parallel developments in various parts of the world,each of which is assumed to have its own motor of change leading to the common fate of modeity.The modem period,by contrast,is often portrayed as a much more integrated system based on heightened levels of inteational connection and exchange.This analytical distinction between parallel and integrating processes represents the two major approaches of world history:comparison and connection.How did this distinction play out in the actual development of the early modem and modem world history? In particular,how does the dual approach help us understand the overall transformation of the world into a global system dominated by Weste Europe prior to 1900?
