左宗棠一生的后三十年是同创办洋务企业密切相联的。自督闽创办福州船政局始，先后创办多家近代企业，其创办洋务企业的目的是自强御侮。在创办洋务企业的实践中，主张学习西方，是不使列强“挟其长以傲我”；要“用洋人而不为洋人所用”；要立足于自立更生；要不丢弃自己固有的长处等思想于今天有些仍然是可资借鉴的。
