随着近代工业的发展,铁道车辆、汽车、轴承等工业部门所需要的轴承环、轮箍、齿圈、车轮等环形零件的数量急剧增长,而且对其精度的要求也越来越高。这些环形零件,过去一般都是在压力机或锤上自由锻、胎模锻或模锻成形,或用各种断面形状的条料焊接成形。1851年德国Alfred Krupp公司开始用辗压方法制造环形零件。关于车轮的辗压方法,1906年在日本已开始运用。1919年美国的William Todd—Steel公司开始采用车轮辗压机及2000吨油压机制
