In the guarded suburbs of the United States, a dazzling modern metallurgy was born. Workers in white coats poured red hot molten metal at high-speed rotating drums. Metals cool at millions of degrees per second. When these metals spin out of the drum at more than fifty miles per hour, they are already thin, ultra-thin metal strips that look like sparkling aluminized polyester film. It is a completely lattice-free steel, a revolutionary new material called amorphous metal or fiberglass. Unlike ordinary metals with a lattice structure, amorphous metals have many special properties and therefore: made transformers with higher efficiency. This alone will save the United States a billion dollars each year. Can improve the performance of electronic devices such as tape recorder heads.
