[United States of America News, Boston, September 1, 1980] There is a concentrated chemical growth factor in human saliva that has the function of a natural healing agent and is currently being tested. Scientists said that this discovery may enable people to better understand the uncontrolled growth of cancer cells. In 1950, a nerve growth factor (NGF) was isolated from cancer cells and it was found that this factor can make nerve cells in chick embryos grow rapidly. A study recently published in the National Academy of Sciences conference also showed that when NGF is applied to exposed wounds, it can accelerate healing four to five times. NGF is naturally present in mammalian saliva. Dr. Michael Young, a researcher at the University of Florida Medical School, is a team leader at Harvard University.
