《考工典》作为中国传统设计的重要理论文献,其独特的体例和文献编排,有助于我们从中来探寻各文献间的关系,并从中来洞见中国传统设计理论体系的基本规范。“观象制器”、“百工制度”、“能主之人”、“材美工巧”、“巧法造化”等丰富的内容,全面的产生,成为中国传统艺术设计学重要基础著作。研究传统设计的理论形态,首先要面对何为设计形态?从具体层面来讲,设计形态存在于所表现的外观面貌,如形体、色彩等元素;以及系统设计的整体状态,包括其内部结构和运作原理。在《考工典》中,以宏观视角来俯瞰中国古代设计实践,并从设计实践的组织与管理上进行阐述,如对于设计师及工匠的组织管理问题等等务求实效。《考工典》作为中国传统设计理论形态的重要典籍,对中国传统设计及中国传统设计理论的发展提供了不可磨灭的历史价值。
