Brazil produced 1.775 million vehicles in 2002, down 2% from 1,821,000 in 2001. In the meantime, vehicle sales reached 1,487,000 units, a 7.1% decrease from 2001. Brazilian car exports in 2002 amounted to 3.997 billion U.S. dollars, a decrease of 3.2% over the previous year. This is a drop of 5 consecutive years in Brazilian car production and sales volume. The National Association of Automobile Manufacturers of Brazil believes that the main reason for the above situation is the appreciation of the U.S. dollar against the Brazilian currency BRL and the increase of the interest rate in Brazil, plus some political instability during the election year. Nevertheless, Brazil is still the largest automobile producer in South America, and the car, together with steel and aircraft manufacturing, has become the three pillar industries in Brazil’s industry. Most major auto companies in the world such as GM, Ford, Volkswagen, Fiat, Citroën, Renault, Toyota and Honda are all optimistic about Brazil and have set up factories here.
