Philosophy is the foundation of linguistics. The fundamental differences of various linguistic schools are rooted in the divergences between different linguistic philosophies. The philosophical foundation of cognitive linguistics is the experiential hypothesis, first proposed by George Lakeoff and Mark Johnson in the book Metaphors We Live By, which is a critique and challenge to the traditional Western language philosophy. Cognitive Linguistics Reexamines Traditional Linguistic Issues (Relationship between Language and Objective World, Language Origin, Language Similarity, Category, etc.) and Development of Its Own Theories (such as Conceptual Metaphor Theory and Conceptual Metonymy Theory)
