西沙群岛由大小30余个岛、洲、礁、暗滩组成,除高尖石外,均是珊瑚礁。但是,珊瑚礁在形成过程中到底是什么生物起作用?在这个问题上有的认为主要是造礁石珊瑚起主要作用,也有的认为石灰藻的珊瑚藻类起相当重要的作用或积极的作用,同样,在西沙群岛向海迎浪面有无“海藻脊”(Algal ridge)亦有分岐,有人认为西沙群岛相当普遍地存在海藻脊,而有人确认为西沙群岛不存在“海藻脊”。
