一般培养小球藻不外用有机和无机肥料两类。有机肥料常用者为人尿、动物尿等,无机肥料则常以各种无机盐按不同种类、不同比例配成。前者虽然易得,但以此培养之小球藻作为食用或药用实不相宜,一方面,人尿是农作物的重要肥源之一,大力开展小球藻的培养,势必大量消耗这种肥料,而影响农业所需要之肥料供应。另一方面,因这种肥料所得之成品亦不受人欢迎。因此,有人企图以其他适宜的肥料代之。目前流行的,适于食用或药用小球藻的肥料大概要算酱油了。这种肥料确实没有上进缺点,而且经过他人以及我们自己的试验证明,在加速小球藻的生长繁殖方面较之人尿以及某些无机肥料如水生6号有过之而无不及。
