The suppression of human emotions by modern industrial civilization is the traditional creative theme of western writers. The contemporary British writer Ian McEwan inherited the thinking of the emotional state under the modern industrial civilization in his first classic love, the last ritual. The eight short stories contained in the novel constitute a network of multiple emotions that are lonely, absurd, and desperate, which are also interwoven with innocence in order to reflect the living conditions confronting mankind today. McEwan’s creation based on the current British social reality, a good embodiment of the literature reflects the social reality of the function.
