In early 1990, the Swedish Defense Equipment Agency signed a contract with Cork to build three submarines. Early research and feasibility studies on this type of submarine began in the early 1980s and mid-term. Design work began in 1988. The main mission of this boat is to defend 1,700 nautical miles of Sweden’s coastline from aggression. Its specific tasks are the implementation of attacks, mine laying, divers, anti-submarine operations and maritime monitoring; can also be used as a training platform. In this paper, the design, layout, hull system (especially propulsion system), navigation, weaponry and combat system of this boat are introduced in detail. Three new submarines of the Swedish Royal Navy are named Gotland, Apulan and Hollan. The first boat was put into operation in 1997, two follow-up boats will be in service within 12 to 18 months intervals. For the first time, the submarine installed a Stirling AIP system designed, built and assembled by Cork Corporation - an air-independent propulsion unit. Put into use this device will significantly increase the submarine underwater life force. The combination of detection equipment, combat systems and weaponry and platforms made the boat particularly suitable for fighting enemy ships that invaded the Swedish sea. The boat designer conducted a comprehensive study on the performance parameters of the boat such as endurance, weapon load, shock and noise, and combined the modern new technology with high efficiency to develop the submarine at a relatively low cost. As the main contractor, Cooke Corporation takes full responsibility not only for assembly and parts assembly but also for design and construction. The first and last sections of the boat were built and assembled at Kars Shipyard, about 200 kilometers from the port of Malmö; these sections were transported by barge to Malmo, where Cork Company reassembled all the sections into an entire submarine.
