张楚琨,中国近现代史的亲历者和见证人,有着丰富且不平凡的经历。他曾三次入狱,又一度成为新加坡的胡椒大王、商船老板、报社总经理,是中国新闻社、全国侨联、华侨博物馆的发起人和负责人之一。历任第三至第八届全国政协委员,在海内外华侨华人中颇有影响。如今已过耄耋之年仍奔波于北京——厦门——南洋,继续从事侨务事业。有人因此劝他为自己树碑立传,张楚琨却真诚地说:“我是信仰马克思主义的普通一兵,八十多年来所尽义务太少了,谈不上奉献,无非是‘孺子牛’的呐喊与勤务,全心全意为人民服务,理所当然。” (一) Zhang Chu-kun, witness and witness of the modern history of China, has a rich and unusual experience.
