James Joyce is a universally recognized “stream of consciousness ” novel master. In the creation of Ulysses, he is unrivaled in the ability to control the time of the clock and the mental time. He grasps the time of the clock and cleverly dictates the framework of the book and the narrative of the work. He also uses the mental time flexibly to show the ever-changing awareness activities and the bizarre complexities of sensual life. This article mainly studies and analyzes how the author uses exquisite and skillful art techniques to free his creation from the shackles of time and how to display the modern consciousness and spiritual structure of western society.
