Aim of the “Ten Ecosystem Studies” In order to explore the feasibility of using multispectral images of “land satellites” and the corresponding automated data processing techniques to inventory forest and grassland resources, the NASA LB Johnson Space Center and The USDA Forest Service, in 1976, conducted a joint study of “Ten Ecosystems.” This study roughly divides the contiguous area of the continental United States into ten ecological communities.
