目前日本鳖的年消费量约800吨,其中1/4来自进口,其余均系国内生产。养鳖所需设施可分为亲鳖池、稚鳖池、幼鳖池和养成池。通过采用温泉水或锅炉加温的方式,可使饲养一年半的鳖成熟产卵。卵的孵化设施有改良式恒温孵化器、传递式孵化器和常温下的简单孵化池等几种。孵化后约两周便可以每平方米150尾左右的密度放养。饲养到10月中下旬,体重可达8~10克。经过冬季加温饲养的幼鳖一般体重达250~300克,在室外养成池继续饲养到10月份,体重达800~1000克便可出池。
