At the moment, changes and movements in the global culture have forced one to rethink the boundaries of comparative literature and its possible role in today’s global media culture and many alternative modernities. If people still want to stick to the belief that literature has the function of cultural transformation during times of crisis, then its power of change must be closely linked with its possible intervention in times of crisis. Literature is very suitable for playing the role of “transitional space”. It can coordinate the boundaries between subject and culture, external world and inner world, consciousness and unconsciousness, and between different civilizations and history. Such boundaries not only generate knowledge and global cultural products, but also intervene in the emotional economy in circulation throughout the global literature market. Among these qualifying factors, one can define the two most basic functions of literary transitional space as “boycott function” and “promotion function”.
