Objective: To observe the effect of botulinum toxin type A (BTXA) on the improvement of spasticity and quality of life in patients with hemifacial spasm (HFS). Methods: Sixty-eight patients with HFS were injected with BTXA locally. The degree of spasticity was determined before treatment and one month after treatment, and the quality of life was evaluated by using the World Health Organization Quality of Life Scale (WHOQOL-BREF). Results: 97.04% of HFS patients showed a significant improvement in spasticity one month after BXTA treatment, and the scores of WHOQOL-BREF in physiology, psychology, social relations, total health and overall quality of life were significantly higher Before treatment, the difference was statistically significant (P <0.01). CONCLUSION: Local injection of BTXA can quickly relieve or eliminate muscle spasms in HFS patients and improve their quality of life.
