In 2010, the explosive expansion of social media, Weibo (Chinese equivalent of Twitter) in particular, marked China’s immersion into the era of mobile internet. As a forerunner in the sector, Zhongguancun displays remarkable potential. Statistics show that by 2011, Zhongguancun had gathered more than 6,000 mobile internetrelated enterprises including 45 listed companies, with employees totaling 400,000, and formed a complete mobile internet industrial cluster. After the establishment of Zhongguancun Mobile Internet Industry Alliance, the area has become a hub of the country’s mobile internet industry.
In 2012, Zhongguancun launched a strategic project aiming to encourage innovation in emerging industrial clusters, especially in such fields as next-generation internet, mobile internet, 4G mobile communications, satellite application, biotechnology, health, energy conservation, and environmental protection. In 2013, Zhongguancun Science Park achieved revenue of more than 3 trillion yuan.
