Presently, communication satellites in orbit can generate a maximum DC power of about 3 kilowatts, providing communication capacity of 50 low-power transponders, that is, providing 25,000 bidirectional voice channels or the equivalent television and data transmission capacity. In order to meet the telecommunications needs of the 21st century, designers are trying hard to design space communication stations with a DC power of several hundred thousand watts and a capacity of several million channels.
