开远市位于云南省东南部,东连砚山、邱北,南接蒙自、个旧,西靠建水,北邻弥勒。历史悠久,夏、商、周三代属古(四句)町国范围,历代隶属关系均有变迁。旧称阿迷,阿迷乃彝音转译。明永历帝二年大西军李定国曾以“开拓荒远边疆”之意,改阿迷州为开远州,清代又复名阿迷州,民国二年改为阿迷县。1931年,以“四面伸开,联接广远”之意,复名开远至今。全市总面积1950平方公里,人口22.4万人,世居汉、彝、苗、回、壮等20多个民族,其中:彝、苗、回、壮等少数民族人口占总人口的51.2%。1981年11月,经国务院批准,由县改为市,隶属红河州,辖3个办事处、5个乡、49个村公所。
