研究不同的地方性彝族史诗中鹿形象的呈现，揭示彝族的多样性。尽管这些形象和名称对于局外人可能具有完备的意思，但是作为一个民族集团，彝族对其却有着独特的理解。正是就这种意义而言，彝族在与其他民族的交互之中建立了自身的民族认同。因此，通过对口述文学中动物形象的分析以理解这个过程显得十分重要。
