唐代吏部侍郎为吏部机构中职权与地位仅次于尚书的职官,其设置贯穿于唐代始终,是唐代重要的职事官之一。对于吏部侍郎的选任,涉及候选人的入仕途径、仕履、家族影响、业务专长等等。迁入官为吏部侍郎任职前最近一次历职,为仕途迁转中紧要的一环。唐代吏部侍郎迁入官以尚书省等三省官、地方官为重要的选任来源。在迁入的原因中业务方面的熟悉程度具有重要影响,一方面是对共性事务性工作的了解,一方面是对铨选所需独特才能的具备。迁入官历职的优良表现也是重要因素,这从迁入官中地方官的任职情况可见一斑。除了历职方面的要求,与皇帝等具有决策力一方关系的疏密程度也是不可忽视的因素。综合而言,吏部侍郎选任体现的历职情况、业务能力、与最高决策者的关系等是唐代乃至中古职官体系中官员选任概莫能外的因素。
