Yasser Arafat dreamed of creating a Palestinian state since he was a young man in Egypt smuggling guns into Palestine. Yet after six years as the president of the Palestinian Authority, an entity established as a step toward the goal of independence, Arafat has been unable to turn his dream into reality. To Palestinians, he is the symbol of their struggle for a homeland. Yet to Israelis, he is the symbol of the threat to destroy their homeland.
