INTRODUCTION The purpose of this paper is to introduce the development of the understanding of the behavior of trace elements in the formation of igneous rocks since the 1967 Conference on the Origin and Distribution of Elements. To fully comment on this development is impossible, so this article discusses only the rare earth elements in mafic igneous rocks. For a more complete review of REE geochemistry, see Haskin and Paster (1978). Rare earth elements are particularly important for geochemical studies due to the similar behavior of rare earth elements to one another and to the recent availability of Sm-Nd isotopic data.
